Oga U
CHAPTER 1
It was a cool Saturday morning. Jima was about to attend a conference with her friends. On her way past the field, she sights the laundry man popularly known as Oga U.
A few days ago
“Oga U, good morning.”
“Good morning o."
“Oga U, I checked through my clothes, and I didn’t see my black hoodie. The one with an image of white eyes and a smile. Please help me check your shop.”
“Your black hoodie?”
“Yes.” “Okay.”
“I mistakenly pack am put for pesin cloth.”
“Oh, okay. Who is the person? Help me inform them so they can return it. Thank you.”
Jima wasn’t really bothered because it was normal for the laundry man to mix up a person’s clothes in another’s pile. She’d get her hoodie back for sure.
Present hour-on the field
“That your black hoodie, pesin carry am comot from my shop.”
“I no understand.”
“Na one of my customers. The guy get plenty black cardigan for my shop, so my wife mistakenly pack your own join give am.”
“I still no understand.”
“The hoodie na the only cloth wey no dry for the other clothes wey I wash. I kon put am on top your other clothes make e dry. As the guy kon come my shop, my wife carry the hoodie give am.”
“Why would you give my hoodie out, Oga U???”
“Her mind no dey.”
“What of the guy? Can you meet him and tell him to return it?”
“The guy don travel go im village.”
“I don’t understand. He took the cardigan from the shop, and took it to the village the same day?”
“E carry am go im village for im papa burial, na last born e be.”
Jima could feel her blood boiling. She wanted to punch this man in the face so bad. So hard.
“When is he coming back?”
“Ending of this month.”
It was the beginning of October. A few days after her birthday.
“If e no bring am, I go take responsibility. I go pay you the money.”
“Don’t pay me money, give me my sweater.”
“Abeg, I go give you the money if e no bring am.”
Better accept the money. What if this sweater never comes back? You know you’d never wear the sweater again after it comes back. If it comes back. Chai. It better come back o. I need my baby with me.
“Really? Oya now. It’s 10,000 naira, and you will pay for it like you have said. Better remind the man o.”
“I go tell am. Sorry.”
After the harrowing ordeal, she walked across the field to meet her waiting friends.
Her favorite sweater was gone. And it was a gift.
